KOMU-TV Line Producer

I have been a line producer since August 2017. While line producing, I manage the rundown of the entire show. I will decide how to stack the show, meaning which story to lead off the top of the show and which ones to end with. In addition to reporter content, I rewrite national news stories to fit into the broadcast and choose video or graphics to go along with it. As the show airs, I cue live shots and manage the time.

As I walked into the newsroom this day, everyone thought it was going to be a normal news day. But, at a little after 4 p.m. two major news stories dropped: The Missouri Governor was indicted and a top Missouri basketball recruit was finally cleared to play. I had five hours to put this show together. With that amount of time, we were able to send a reporter to gather more information on the governor, synthesize that information for our viewers and draft up something about Michael Porter Jr. (the Mizzou player). Also on this day, the Missouri Athletic Director was sued by the head coach of South Carolina women's basketball team. This information came out clean on air- despite the hectic shift.

This show was the day after the deadly Florida high school shooting. Our information was new and clean at the top of the show. This show was overall very clean because it kept to time throughout. In addition to the content I wrote for the Florida shooting, we also had good reporter content-- even being able to localize the Florida shooting in Missouri. Admittedly, the stacking could have been better.

During this shift, we had many national announcements, like President Trump’s tariff plan. This was a day when national content was more newsworthy than our local content, so it started off the show. I crafted the top of the show, making a breakout of Trump then leading in to our own Missouri drama- Governor Greitens. With that we bridged into local content. We got creative with the show, with a reporter tossing to weather, live shots and utilizing different assets the studio has. I believe this is one of my better shows because my A block was extremely strong. We had good reporter content and the national stories I chose I felt were necessary to be on our air.
